SIGCHI HCI Winter/Summer schools in 2017

1. Computational Fabrication and Smart Matter
This summer school takes place 14-18 June 2017 in Cambridge, MA, USA.
Application Deadline is 3rd March 2017

"This summer school brings together PhD students working on technical HCI research with backgrounds in fabrication, shape changing interfaces, robotics, computer graphics, mechanical engineering, material science, and similar areas. There will be a strong focus on brainstorming new research ideas and transforming them into physically realizable prototypes. We will also include a session on how to apply for academic jobs and will provide feedback for application materials. "

2. International summer school on computational interaction
This summer school takes place 12-17 June 2017 in Lucerne, Switzerland
Application Deadlines are Early-bird (reduced rates): 28 February 2017 and Full-rate: from 1 March 2017

"The goal of the summer school is to teach PhD students and HCI researchers the foundations of computational tools in the context of user interface design and their application in interactive systems. This encompasses modeling of interaction, deriving and engaging with statistical models of content, automatic learning of preferences and computer-assisted optimization of interfaces. Applied machine learning and appropriate quantitative analysis, suitable for real-time, closed-loop interactions will be key elements of the summer school program."

3. International Summer School on e-Health and m-Health
This summer school is tentatively scheduled for the 26-30th June in Dublin, Ireland.
Application Deadline is TBD

"The purpose of this international summer school is to gather the next generation of e-health researchers from HCI and those they will collaborate with, and give them a grounding in the qualitative and quantitative research methods which can be used to address questions in e-health, practical experience in the development of application ideas, designs and the research programme which should accompany them, and an introduction to the technology transfer process and how it can operate in e-health."

4. Summer School on Methods in Human-Computer Interaction
This summer school takes place 7-14 July 2017 in Łódź, Poland.
Application Deadline is 31st May 2017

"This school is aimed at students who are interested in a comprehensive overview of methods in HCI and embracing the variety of the field’s methodologies. We will solidify and grow the relatively small Eastern-European HCI community. and connect it better to the global SIGCHI network. We planned an exciting week with impromptu studies, public events, interesting lecturers and great opportunities for networking."

5. Summer School on Pervasive Interaction for binational challenges
This summer school takes place 28th Aug - 1st Sept 2017 in Ensenada, Mexico
Application Deadlines is 30th May 2017

"The idea for this summer school was born with the idea of bringing together groups of scientists who are interested in the interplay between HCI and Ubicomp to solve challenges affecting at least two countries. The intersection of both fields addresses a wide variety of topics—from healthcare to sustainability to cross-cultural collaboration—and requires truly multidisciplinary teams including people from the academia, industry and community organizations. The summer school will be organized around solving socio-technical challenges relevant to both US and Mexico. Each student will decide to either participate in a (1) design competition, (2) data sensing challenge, or (3) an evaluation challenge. Lectures and project work will be framed around each challenge."

6. Summer School on Playful Interactions with OzCHI
This summer school takes place 24-27 November 2017 in Melbourne, Australia
Application Deadlines are Early-bird: 1 May 2017 and Standard: from 1 Aug 2017

"We invite students from all parts of the world, to participate in the first SIGCHI Sponsored Summer School on Playful Interaction 2017, happening in Melbourne, Australia. In this five-day event, participants will learn about significant game design concepts, game mechanics and techniques that are increasingly used in modern game development and game design research. There will be a strong focus on developing skills through practical sessions, which will give students direct experience in building and studying games and most importantly they will “learn about fun by having fun"

7. The future of crowdsourcing in developing countries -technical, design, social, and ethical implications
This summer school takes place 10-14 July 2017 in Suzhou, China.
Application Deadline is 10th June 2017

"Crowdsourcing is an emerging trend that promises to transform collaboration and creation, in several domains: creative work, research, business, cultural cooperation, etc. As such it represents a field of immense interest for research but also a tool that students can leverage during their studies. We organize a summer school to address the technical, design and social aspects of crowdsourcing particularly for the Chinese context."


A summer or winter school is a program of lectures, classes, tutorials, hands on technology sessions, exercises or group work organised by a group of SIGCHI members for the benefit of SIGCHI student members. This funding call < > was supported as a special funding initiative of the SIGCHI Development Fund <>. The ACM SIGCHI aims to support international and interdisciplinary initiatives for the exchange of ideas about the field of human-computer interaction. Our development fund < > provides resources to alleviate some of the constraints that can stifle the exchange of ideas across our diverse community and around the world.

The Research-Practice Interaction community is a bridge between research and practice in HCI, including all flavors thereof (user experience, usability, interaction design, information architecture, etc.etc.). We aim to promote the exchange of information between researchers and practitioners, such that research and its results are more accessible to practitioners and that practitioner information needs are conveyed to researchers.
